  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before treatment
  • Avoid blood thinner medications such as Ibuprofen / Aspirin 3-4 days prior (unless taken for a medical condition and advised by your doctor)
  • Avoid scheduling appointments right before major social engagements (significant swelling will occur)
  • Purchase compression garments as advised or if required for swelling / bruising (discussed during consultation)
  • Ensure you have adequate time off from work / social gatherings to rest and recover

Discomfort

Initially
  • Minimal (sting for few seconds)
  • Most tolerate very well
  • Numbing cream available
Post treatment
  • Discomfort / pain (manageable for most with rest / ice / arnica cream / regular paracetamol)
After care
  • Do not rub / massage / apply pressure to treatment area
  • Swelling will begin immediately once treatment completed and will peak by the second day
  • Burning sensation / swelling / discomfort / some bruising will last approx 3 days with most symptoms resolving after 7 days
  • Avoid alcohol 48 hrs post treatment (will exacerbate bruising)
  • Avoid strenuous exercise 48 hrs post treatment( sweating will cause excretion of product injected from the skin which will reduce the effectiveness of treatment)
  • Apply compression garments if required to reduce swelling / bruising
  • Keep hydrated, recommend 2 litres water daily

May use Arnica or Hirudoid cream on bruising (available over counter local pharmacy)

Apply ice to treatment area to calm swelling / burning sensation

May use Paracetamol for pain relief

Side effects
Common
  • Swelling / bruising / redness / tenderness / itchiness
  • Some patients report mild numbness to area weeks after treatment, will resolve within time
  • May trigger cold sores if susceptible (utilise Zovirax ointment / Famir 500mg x 3 prophylactically if you have no medical contradiction to same, available over counter local pharmacy)
Uncommon
  • Allergic reaction / anaphylaxis
  • Infection at injection site (rare when sterile technique used)
Not suitable
  • Pregnant / breastfeeding
  • Known allergy to product
  • Recent vaccination (2 weeks either side)
  • Infection at proposed injection site
  • Regular excessive alcohol consumption
  • Heavy smoker
  • Liver / kidney diseases
  • Diabetes / Peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
  • Inappropriateness for area (lifestyle changes may be more suitable)
  • Active cold sore (injections may aggravate same)
  • Unrealistic aesthetic expectations
  • Body dysmorphia / mental health concerns - please note a screening tool will be used to assess suitability for procedures as per AHPRA guidelines (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency)
